One Day in May – A novel by Keith Wood
This first Novel from The Yorkshire Fenix is a poignant but humane story of the real life of someone born illegitimate, with an affliction in 18th Century Derbyshire. It is a story of Social Justice or lack of it experienced by most of our ancestors who were commoners. The probable real life of a nobody, after extensive research, commissioned to the dust of time as most of our personal lives as commoners will be. But this story of a real person who survived for 52 years roaming the borderlands of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire enjoying it’s natural beauty and experiencing many interesting incidents along the way, is brought back to life in 2024 by the author, a man of mystery risen from the Ashes. It is a commentary on a typical 18th Century life which would have been experienced in this part of England. The subject in the story a man at 52 years of age is driven to commit murder, accidentally? – Well manslaughter or justifiable homicide - were not considered in those times, so he is punished as prescribed by law at the time, by hanging from the neck until dead.
This is not a gruesome story but a realistic snapshot of the life of our ancestors and you the reader is left to consider was justice really served. Poor Rob? or he got what he deserved? But for the grace of your God go I.
